A 30-day personal carbon footprint reduction challenge—track energy use, travel choices, diet, and water usage via a mobile tracker.

A 30-day sustainability campaign encouraging students and staff to track and reduce their carbon footprint. Participants log daily habits in travel, diet, water use, and energy via a mobile tracker. Weekly tips and leaderboard updates keep engagement high, with prizes awarded to those who make the greatest reductions.

The revolution of recharge, reuse, and recycle - Public Lecture

How can we establish a sustainable, circular economy that is more environmentally friendly? Dr. Penelope Hood and Dr. Simon Evans from Oxford College of Business will delve into this innovative field on Tuesday, 15 December, 2023.

In order to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, the world requires sustainable energy solutions, including two billion electric vehicles on the roads. However, the production of one Tesla demands eight kilograms of lithium for its batteries. This ambitious target necessitates extensive lithium mining, a practice that is depleting crucial water sources. Considering that the metal is also essential for batteries in laptops, mobile phones, planes, trains, and bikes, the question arises: Is there enough lithium on Earth? Possibly not in the ground. But what if an alternative solution exists? 'Urban mining' involves extracting resources from electronic waste. Researchers at Oxford College of Business believe that our forward trajectory should involve tapping into these electronic waste stockpiles. If we can retrieve valuable metals from e-waste and employ them in the creation of next-generation batteries with enhanced safety, cycle life, and high recyclability, we could be on the path to a sustainable, circular economy that is more ecologically sound. Did you know? The exterior of a battery will decompose in about 100 years, exposing the heavy metals inside, which will never decompose and are toxic to the environment. Clearly, it's pretty critical to make sure we are disposing of batteries correctly!

Join us for an eco-conscious initiative as OCB's Department of Sustainability together with the OCB Alumni proudly presents Battery Recycling Week from 14th to 20th August. We encourage all students, staff, and faculty members to participate actively in this effort to promote sustainable practices. Simply drop off your used batteries at designated collection points across campus. Together, we can make a positive impact on the environment by responsibly recycling batteries and preventing harmful e-waste. Let's take a step towards a greener future.
